William Hall worked as Manager of a coal mine’s company store in Cabin Creek W.V. William and Myrtle moved to Roanoke VA about 1916. In Roanoke William worked for the N&W Railroad, keeping
track of the location of rolling stock. He lost his job in a strike shortly after Lillian and John Wood [R560] were married. Thereafter, during
the depression, he worked part of the time as a salesman, but was sometimes unemployed. During the 1940s the Halls lived in
Portsmouth Va., where William had a clerical job with a railroad.
Son Raymon lived near or with our family during much of my childhood, and I saw quite a lot of him. He was good humored, but
slow to mature and resistant to education. He worked at various
pursuits, chiefly automobile mechanics. The pinnacle of his life was probably his WWII service in Europe, as Crew Chief for an A20 attack bomber (which he was convinced was the best aircraft we had, capable of outfighting a fighter plane, if put to the task).
