Mary Kate (Molly) Armentrout (4/10/1867-5/14/1929), dau. of

(2016) At the time of the 1850 census of Bath County Va., John Carter Wood was still living in the household of John and Elvira Armentrout [R352], on property abutting his father’s land. However in 1849 John had received, as his share of his father’s estate in Randolph County W.Va., 262 acres in Cherry Flat (DB18-79, tract C1 in Fig. R361b.) He went there to live, and married W. H. Wilson’s daughter Clarissa. Their first child appears to have been born before they were married. Clarissa died at a young age, perhaps of complications resulting from the birth of their second child. John Carter remarried a year later.

Second wife: Mary W. (Polly) Channell
Father: Samuel Channell
Mother: Sarah Channell
Born: 2/7/1832
Died: 10/28/1877, buried in the Jenks Cemetery, Mingo

Married: 8/14/1856, by J. Sukel. The marriage record [S106] gives
John’s father’s name as William Edward Wood, a rare example of this
    usage.

Children:
Samuel H. Wood, 6/11/1857-12/22/1936 [R372]

    1941, dau. of A. N. and Elvira Simmons), ch. Newton, Eva M. (m. __

    in Fig. R362a.

Ada Anna Sharp), Iva Merte (m. __Dilly), Victor. Arva and Iva

    4/20/1985), Arlo G. Brady (1909-1982, m. Wilma Barb [1923-
    1/6/1954])

The names and birthdates of John and Mary’s children listed in the 1870 census of Randolph County are substantially different from those given above.

However, Robert Hodges [S185] (2015) suggests John Carter Wood had another wife before he married Clarissa Elizabeth Wilson. There is a marriage record in Allegheny County, Virginia for John C. Wood and Maria Gillaspie July 2, 1850. Then in the 1850 census, Allegheny County, District 1, page 52, household 351/352 is:

John C. Wood 25 male farmer $2000 real estate born Virginia
Maria Wood 24 female b. Virginia
Shepherd Gilliland 5 male b. Va.
Jane Gilliland 3 b. Va.
Elisabeth Campbell 20 female b. Va.
