(2010) Edsel was the third and last child born to Dennis Floyd Wood and Russie Cooper Crews Wood. He was born at Camp Creek, Mercer County, W. Va. on August 9, 1930.
Edsel graduated from Daniels Elementary School in 1944 and Shady Spring High School in 1948 in Raleigh County, W. Va. While in high school he played varsity football.
Edsel married Gledis Lou Shrewsbury on July 8, 1951 at the First Baptist Church in Shady Springs, Raleigh County, W. Va. They were blessed with three children: Rebecca Ann Wood in 1954, Steven Edward Wood in 1958, and Edsel Carl Wood in 1963. Rebecca was injured at birth and required full-time care throughout her life. She died on January 31, 2009 at the age of 54. She was loved and cherished dearly by her family and everyone that met her. After the death of her father, Edsel Crews Wood, in 1984, her mother was her primary care giver until Gledis's health declined about 2000. It was then that an "assistance program" began providing round-the-clock care for her for the rest of her life. This was a real blessing for everyone involved.
Edsel spent almost all of his life in Raleigh County, W. Va. except for a period in 1960 and 1961 in Richmond, Va., where he accepted a job with the General Electric Capital Corp. After a period of time, he and his family decided to return to Raleigh Co., W. Va. where he lived the rest of his life. In 1974 he suffered a serious heart attack and was unable to work for about two and a half years.
Steven Edward Wood is an Information Technology Database Administrator in Columbus, Ohio. Steve became the step-father of two daughters, Rachael Weaver and Emily Weaver, when he married Barbara Sue Weaver on July 29, 2000 in Gambier, Ohio.
Edsel Carl Wood, the last child, is employed by a firm providing technical services doing "logistic" work for the Fort Campbell, Ky. Army base. He married Pamela Ann Bueltman on August 18, 1990 in Florissant, Mo. They are the parents of three sons ranging in age from seven to fifteen years. They are: Dylan born August 10 1994, Nolan born October 15 1997, and Evan born October 5 2002.
Edsel Crews Wood was a good and caring husband and father until his untimely death on January 15, 1984 at age 53 in a Beckley Hospital of congestive heart failure.
Edsel was the jokester and story teller of the family. He never met a stranger. He was employed much of his life around the mines— operating equipment of various types.
Edsel and his daughter, Rebecca Ann, are buried in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens cemetery near Beckley, Raleigh County, W. Va.
