    County Va.
William Spencer, a “religious fanatic” who became a circuit rider after
    having a falling out with the family over their “godlessness.” He
    married and started a school in Charlotte County that was run on
    religious guidelines so strict that the families of his pupils revolted and
    forced him to give it up in 1804.

Sharp Spenser served in the Revolutionary War in the capacity of 1st Lieutenant in the Prince Edward County Militia (9/1777). In 1779 he was appointed Captain of the Prince Edward County Militia.
